Shearing

Shearing

I shear my entire flock of about 100 head of sheep and goats.  This is particularly hard with the Wensleydale and Teeswater sheep because they are flighty and very large; some weighing around 280 lbs.  I have a slight build and devised a way of laying them down and shearing them rather than shearing them like a traditional shearer does (see picture below).  Please visit Sheep! magazine for an article to see the process.   I also have a Youtube channel which shows what I do.

Update; I am having Master Shearer David Kier from WI come here in Oct. 2012 to help me make the switch to a shearing station.  This man is so nice and such a gentleman. He did not pass judgement that I am not a “professionally trained” shearer but rather, was HAPPY to come to Ca. and teach me the “real” fundamentals.  I am really nervous because I am so indoctrinated into shearing my way.  It will be hard to switch over and I see a long road a head.  That said, as I get older (I am 50 years old) I realize I need to streamline the amount of time it takes me.  In 120 degree heat and my small stature, I am hoping David can help me make the switch, be more efficient and take 1/2 the time it normally does for me to shear.  More UPDATES:  Lister shears is sponsoring me with product and support.  Please read more on the link above.  WOOT!
